Junior Golf in 2016

2016 was a great season for Junior Golf here at Merry-Hill. We had over 100 juniors between the ages of 3 and 15 participating in our many programs. Before all the kids went back to school we wrapped up our final week of summer camp, the Junior League and we celebrated the summer by hosting a Junior Club Championship Tournament.

Junior League Achievements

Throughout July and August our Junior League Members got together each Tuesday afternoon to play 9 holes of best ball. They rotated through the red, white and blue courses to experience everything Merry-Hill has to offer. The league members varied in age from 10 to 14 with both boys and girls participating. Although no one had a hole-in-one this year, many birdies, long drives and laughs were had throughout the season - we even had a group go as low as 21 on the White Big Cup Golf. This summer golf league saw only 1 rain day, which reduced their number of rounds from 9 to 8. We concluded the season on Tuesday August 30th with a final 9-hole round on the Red Course. Our winning team "Pete" shot a low score of 25 (Leo Pellegrino, Derek Bush, Ethan Sauve and Cullan Graham), followed by a two-way-tie for second with a score of 26. League MVP, Longest Driver, Most Improved and Best Attendance were awarded to Reid Nahrgang, Lucas Jasmins, Cole Nahrgang and Kaylee Kulker, consecutively. Well done to all the Junior League Members for your participation and enthusiasm this season - we hope to see you back again next season for another great summer filled with golf and fun!

Junior Club Championship Achievements

On Thursday September 1st, Merry-Hill Golf Club held their Junior Club Championship Tournament on the Red Nine. A Junior Club Championship Tournament has not been held at the Golf Club for quite some time -  the last time it was held was in 1992, more than 20 years ago! This year we had 42 junior golfers participate in our Club Championship. The skill levels varied from beginner golfers who joined us for lessons or camp earlier that year, to golfers who travel around Ontario competing on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour. This tournament was intended as one last golf outing for the kids before school started - with a few prizes for those who played their best. We witnessed a few personal best scores, drives and longest putts made. Prizes were awarded to the top 6 placing male and female golfers, as well as to the top 4 golfers in the "middle of pack".

The 2016 Male Junior Club Champions are Ethan Simoes and Jonas Hofer. These two hockey friends, and members of our Junior League, tied with an outstanding score of 33 on the Red Course, both shooting their best rounds to date. The 2016 Female Junior Club Champion was awarded to Jasmine Nay who shot a 68 on the Red Course. Jasmine took up golf only this year, participating in our Junior Group Lessons and our weekly Junior League. The Champions each won an engraved trophy for themselves, a $50 Gift Card to Golf Town and their names will be engraved on our new Junior Club Championship Plaque to be kept in the Clubhouse. In second place, Derek Bush and Kaylee Kulker were awarded a $25 Gift Card to Sport Chek and a Green Shield Water Bottle. Both Derek and Kaylee are members in our weekly Junior League - consistent golf clearly pays off! Third place was awarded to Amber Moran and Tyler May who went home with a Green Shield Golf Towel and a sleeve of Noodle Golf Balls. Clayton Duchesne placed fourth and won a $15 Gift Card to Sport Check, Cole Nahrgang placed fifth and received a medallion, and Leo Pellegrino placed sixth and won a sleeve of Golf Balls. The "middle of the pack" was designated by the score of 50. Andrew Bishop and Grayden Strohack shot 50 and received participation medals, and lastly Fionn McKenna and Mac Cole shot 51 and received their very own Merry-Hill Golf Club Junior Golf Shirt.

A very large congratulations are to be given out to all those who participated in our 2016 Junior Club Championship, and to our new Club Champions!

At Merry-Hill Golf Club we are dedicated to growing the game of golf, particularly among Youth in our area. Golf has many direct and indirect benefits to youth besides the obvious outdoor activity benefit. Increasing golf among our Youth means they:

  • Acquire responsibility and respect for themselves and others,
  • Learn and enjoy a game they can play for their entire life,
  • Improve their overall athletic ability by engaging various muscle movements,
  • Create friendships that last a lifetime

If you want your child to develop these skills and have fun doing so, our Junior Golf Programs are a perfect start. We offer a wide range of lesson programs and summer camps that focus on your child’s needs – whether they strictly want to have fun at a summer camp, or focus on developing their game with our Development Program, we have a program for everyone at every age!
